This tiny krokbragd weaving honors my Norwegian heritage and both of my parents’ craftworks: my father was a weaver and my mom is a prolific knitter – I use the tiny ends of her skeins of yarn for my weaving weft.

Krokbragd is a traditional Scandinavian weave especially popular in Norway in the 18th & 19th centuries, used for anything requiring thickness and warmth, such as bed coverlets, and rugs. Krokbragd translates as crooked path, named for the undulation of each row of the weaving that is created from the threading scheme.

The scale and presentation of my krokbragd works remove any possibility of functionality. The creation is an act of play with color and pattern. In keeping the pieces small, I am asking the viewer to move in closer and enter into an intimate experience with the weaving, much like holding a book, a tea cup, or a beachcombed rock.
